General

Q: What computer programs do you use?

A: I currently use Adobe CS5/6 products. For all my digital art, I worship the creation of Photoshop. I own but rarely use MS Paint or Corel Painter. Collaborative canvas programs I'm fond of are openCanvas and the online programs iScribble.net and ArtGround's Sketcher.

For animations, I primarily use Flash but another good program is Toon Boom Studio. I'll also use After Effects and Photoshop.

For all my YouTube video projects, Premiere and After Effects are amazing tools. I would like to add that Windows Movie Maker is the worst video editing program on the planet.

For website creation and DA journal css, I use Notepad and Dreamweaver.

3D work is done in Autodesk Maya 2012. Sometimes I play around with Google Sketchup.

Q: I want to get a good art program but I can't afford Photoshop, what do you recommend?

A: Photoshop is damn expensive, around $800 or something. Even at student discount prices some people can't spend that kind of money. Most all programs come with a trial so use that to your advantage. You can buy Photoshop Elements instead for about $100 that includes all the tools and features you'll probably be needing to use as a beginner. A totally free program that many download as a Photoshop alternative is GIMP, which I've not used myself but I hear is quite good considering. openCanvas is very nice too (and free). Lots of people prefer the traditional media look of Corel Painter or Paint Tool SAI (but they're not exactly cheap either). Or you can always just pirate stuff (shhh) XD

Q: What do you use to draw on the computer? How do you get your lines so smooth?

A: I draw with a computer graphics tablet; a Wacom Intuos3 model. In the words of my art instructor: Drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a brick. The pen is pressure sensitive and the coordinates of the tablet are mapped to your computer screen. It takes some getting used to and some good hand-eye coordination, but I'm almost better at drawing with a tablet than with an actual pencil! (Still not sure that's a good thing).

The alternative to get smooth lines is to become best friends with the pen tool. It's a really awesome tool once you learn how to properly use it and is great for inking your scanned drawings.

Photoshop Help

Things like using the pen tool, about layers, making an animated gif icons for DA, etc. Coming eventually
