As you can imagine, I've been immersed as much as possible into Pokémon as possible since it came out (asdfghjkl *happy flails*) and would love to have more friends to connect with. Please post your friend codes below so I can add you Which game did you guys get and who did you pick as your starter (both Kalos and Kanto)? I have X and picked Froakie and Charmander.
Riley 3DS Friend Code: 2191-9047-0147
I've also made a new 6th gen meme for those looking for something fun to participate in, you don't have to draw your answers either- you can type in the boxes or paste in pictures. I can't wait to look at all your responses! Soon as I have time, I'll be filling it out myself.
I still plan to open commissions this month, soon as I'm caught up with my current batch. I am finishing up the last two RMFC 2012 commissions within the next day or two and have been working on my RMFC 2013 list on and off as well. Quotes will open soon, not sure on the exact date yet but it will go live before commissions slots do. I will also be taking a lot more OTS (on-the-spot) livestream commissions and am doing a bit of price adjustment on my commissions list to reflect better prices for sketches by separating rough sketches from refined sketches.
Masks and webstore items are doing awesome and I've been keeping up a very consistent flow consistently for the last month, so I'll be sticking to the current schedule I've got going. Turnaround is a week, so if you want anything for Halloween, purchasing something this week would be ideal. I'm still working on perfecting the eye mold that has been giving me trouble left and right, and once that's ready I'll be able to offer clear eyes and color tinted eyes in both 2D and 3D. I'm working with CircuitPawz and ~sgtknifeman to offer LEDs and painted eyes respectively. I am in the middle of re-sculpting the dragon mask and slightly tweaking the canine mask!
So expect this to be ready sometime in November, but I'll be sure to keep you posted on what's going on with that. I'll be doing some Livestreaming sessions as I sculpt as well.
Firstly, I'll be at Nan Desu Kan (Colorado anime convention) with ~sgtknifeman hosting our creature costuming panels again. I may skip attending Friday but should be dragging Groudon out of the closet for the Pokémon photoshoots. Otherwise I'll be in my Shadow Lugia hoodie. Check out the panel details here:
I wanted to announce that I'm holding off on opening commissions this month. I didn't want to do that because there's no thing I hate more than having to take back what I said; when I make plans I want to be able to stick to them... but things happen. It's already hard enough to plan Livestreams because it's just hard to foresee what will get in the way. But until I've got more of an idea what my daily routine will be like, it may be a sporadic for awhile so I apologize in advance.
There will be a limited number of "Custom Cut" and "Cut + Hinged" masks available for purchase from my webstore every week on Wednesdays and will remain up until the slots are taken. If I fill up those order slots during the week, orders will be temporarily disabled until the next Wednesday. Turnaround time is within two weeks. This schedule will remain in effect as long as it is practical to do so.
Monday, September 16 - Commission Livestream [link] Livestream won't cooperate and I have plenty of other things to do today. Cancelled, sorry
Instead of opening quotes this week and accepting slot commissions on the 15th as planned, I am canceling my plans to open commissions and instead will be hosting another On-The-Spot Livestream (which I now dub OTSL) commission day. This may end up being a regular thing.
I really liked the two other times I've done this style of commissions and figured those who want art from me can still get a chance to get something smaller/simpler for now and much sooner than if I took them as a normal slot commission. And I prefer it so I don't have any lingering responsibilities; I finish everything I was paid to do in that day. Downside is I can't do anything too crazy or detailed with these unless I purposely set aside a timeslot to accommodate it and it's best to do that in advance. I will have to judge interest for this.
Tuesday, October 1 - Commission Quotes Open
First day of October I'll be opening quotes for character drawings (NOT COSTUMES). The price I quote you at is good for 3 months so you can submit your requests at any time, get a price for your art, and be ready to grab an open commission slot when they are available. This makes it easier for me to organize and allows you to not have to scramble to fill out your form when I open- you can be ahead of the game and have the best chance at getting an earlier slot. I'll have quotes open for awhile but I'll announce a day in advance when/if I close them again.
Mid-late October - Commission Slots Open
There are many reasons I'm holding off on taking new slots. Number one reason is that I'm not thinking I can (or at least could just barely) finish all the old commissions on my to-do list before Sep 15 -which was the date I originally planned to open for new slots. Basically it would give me no time to enjoy myself and celebrate my accomplishment. I just need a few solid days of work to wrap it up but I don't want to immediately jump back into that hole I just crawled out of after being buried in it for so long. I also have a convention this weekend that interferes with plans to quote and open slots since I won't be home.
SO you can expect the opening date to be in October now. I will be starting on the 2013 RMFC commissions that I took in August first and once that dies down (I'll still be doing some OTSL during this time... again that's On-The-Spot Livestreams) I will have an official new opening day and hope to consistently offer new slots once or twice a month from then on.
Hello internet-land! September is finally here and I've been quite busy catching up on my to-do list throughout August. I have a few people I haven't heard back from yet but I've got one wavy icon, two headshots, five RMFC 2012 commissions at various stages of completion to finish, and have four more masks to cut/hinge before those old commissions are wiped off my list entirely. For once in my life I'm about to be caught up. I still have a few side projects here and there, some old trades and whatnot, and will be worked on throughout this month alongside the new work I will be taking on.
That's right, for the first time in three years, Riley CanineHybrid will be open for new commissions!
I'm finally ready to make art and my business a full-time job and it will be my main source of income for the foreseeable future. If you would like to help aid me in this endeavour and get some original, custom, bitchin' awesome artwork, then get your references ready because I have no idea how fast these slots will go.
"Custom Cut" and "Cut + Hinged" masks will be available for purchase again, experimenting with opening 2-3 slots every week on Wednesdays. Once the slots are taken I will be closed for custom mask orders until the following week. Items like noses, pawpads, and uncut masks will remain open (unless my to-do list becomes too long for me to properly manage them). I will try to maintain a strict turnaround time of 1 week, but no more than 2 weeks. So far all the new orders I've taken throughout August I've been able to keep up with easily alongside everything else.
Monday, September 9 - On-the-spot Livestream sketch commissions
I will be hosting a Livestreaming session at 2pm MST where you can come on and have the chance to purchase commissions or to watch them drawn live as they are requested! More details will be given when that happens but essentially I will be opening for sketch commissions (and maybe a few lineart ones) that are quick turnaround character drawings, each taking anywhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours to complete depending on the character and what kind of drawing is requested. This is an all-day stream and may go on until midnight-ish, and every commission I take that day will be finished that day.
Wednesday-Saturday, September 11-14 - Quotes open Delayed until October
This is the timeframe when I will be open for commission quotes, questions, etc that you may have for me prior to the day I open for new slots. If you are interested in commissioning me, you can give yourself time to prepare for it by typing out all your commission info (I will have a form for you to fill out) and get an idea of what it would cost. Quotes are good for 3 months so even if you are thinking of something down the road, you are welcome to send in your ideas/requests now. Remember, Pokémon and/or simple characters receive a discount. Keep in mind these are for character drawing commissions ONLY; I will not be taking costume commission quotes at this time.
Sunday, September 15 - Commission slots open Delayed until October
This is it! Commission slots go live on this day; depending on how popular or how quickly the slots go, I may be changing up how I accept them but I plan to post it at noon (MST) and give you a 6 hour window. I will then cut off new commission requests and assign out all the slots. If you post for a slot, you are expected to have payment ready immediately; if your commission is $50 or more, then you qualify to have the option of paying half now and half upon completion. This is my current plan: slots will be first come first serve, but for fairness I will set aside at least one slot for the winner of a randomized selection and another slot for accepting a commission of my choice based on how much it interests me from the ones remaining. I will contact you if you received a slot and will post the finalized list on my journal. If you do not pay me or arrange a payment agreement within a few days, you risk losing your slot. Commissions will then close until I have completed all the slots on the list. Directions on how to reserve a slot will be posted in the commission journal.
Let me know if you have any questions, mark your calendars!
I will be attempting to work on some personal costume projects this month if I find the time, but otherwise I'll be concentrating on improving the webstore products with new molds and new items. Planned this month are Dragon and Canine masks 2.0, canine jawsets, and eyes. They will become available for sale as soon as they pass prototyping and quality tests. Expect some Livestreams of sculpting sessions. All I'm really waiting on at this point to be able to start is receiving a new eye mold from a plastic's manufacture that has been completely custom made for CanineHybrid Creations, so my eyes will be a slightly different size and depth than what any other builder offers and will be designed to work with my masks out of the box. When they officially launch, there will be clear resin, colored/tinted resin, and silicone options with half or full (3D/follow-me) versions and LED add-ons. Custom painting is a service I'm working on offering to you soon as well.
That's it for now! I'm off to bed and then I'll be celebrating Labor Day... by doing labor all day |D
Wiping out all the webstore orders and boxing them up for a huge shipping run Tuesday morning! Didn't manage to box everything up in time to ship them off before the holiday, so if you're waiting on any products from me, expect to see them sent out in this batch.
Wanted to inform you that my normal commission work will be suspended for the next 2 weeks and unless otherwise posted, I should be able to resume my work on Monday, August 5th. The reasons behind my absence for the month of July have been due to a family vacation I took from the 8th-15th to Lake Powell, and unfortunately on that trip I was in a jetski accident. I had a collision with a canyon wall and my foot was crushed inbetween. Luckily no bones were broken but had some nasty cuts, bruising, and internal bleeding. While I was treated right away and put on antibiotics, it ended up severely infected and have now been to two doctors and a wound clinic specialist with the instructions to stay off my foot and keep it elevated above my heart 80% of the time.
This means I cannot sit it front of the computer or be in the art studio working for an extended amount of time and must lay down to be able to elevate my foot high enough. I can still be reached through my phone (what I am using now to type this message) but for the time being I cannot return to work for the remainder of the month.
I understand this is a great inconvenience for everyone and if you have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach me via email at riley[at]caninehybrid.com
Thanks once more for your patience; I am still working through emails received while I was away on my trip as well and should be able to respond soon. I cannot wait to get back up and be productive again and will let you know if there are any changes.
In other news, I still plan to be at RMFC as a dealer and host the two costume panels... so whenever I can work on art, it will be dedicated to making items to sell at the convention. I just finished the new paw pad mold tonight and been casting them as much as possible. Trying to determine what colors would be popular, going to do mostly back, some pink, gray, brown, and then I want some neon/blacklite noses and paw pads but not sure which colors. I'll probably put a poll up about it tonight.
I'm back from my amazing annual family vacation to Lake Powell, which was quite the adventure for both the very awesome and the very not-so-awesome. So I'd like to share some stories about it with the main focus being about my poor foot.
For those unfamiliar, Lake Powell is in Utah and it's a ginormous reservoir of canyons and home of the famous Rainbow Bridge national monument.
My family owns a timeshare on a 73 foot houseboat named "The Millennial Escape" (built in 2000) which we've spent a week on for the past 13 years, along with our watertoys "Mini ME" the Yamaha Waverunner and "Escape Pod" the Larson Ski Boat. This year we took my boyfriend ~Verliswolf, my best college friend: ~Ceil, my oldest friend *SorinCrecens and his girlfriend Una, and my brother ~ReyTiger's cuddle buddy ~Skizu so we all had an absolute blast. Would have probably ended up my favorite year to visit because the company was so awesome if it wasn't for my accident.
I was taking Verlis out on the Mini ME for his first Jet Ski ride/lesson ever. Being stupid about wanting to impress him with my driving and give him a thrill ride I full throttled it towards a cliff wall to get a closer look at this rock overhang/cave/carving you can drive under. I miscalculated the distance to the wall and even though I stopped accelerating well before, I knew an impact with the wall was going to be inevitable at an estimated 20 mph (maybe more). I tried to turn and stuck my foot out instinctively to brace against the wall and help absorb the impact to minimize damage. With a loud CRUNCH we hit, and there was some mild cursing, and then there was a lot of blood. I'll try to keep this as non-graphic as possible, and photos will only be links if you want to see them.
Unfortunately my foot ended up smashed between the front right bumper and the rock wall when we hit, another really stupid mistake to have made. Then the back of the jetski tapped the wall. There was scraping on the bottom hull, the front bumper was damaged and some of the fiberglass underneath it, and the back corner bumper was taken off. I was sure that when I looked down at my foot there would be a stump or something all smooshed and distorted. Luckily my foot still looked like one, just with some big gashes on the top. I was surprised by how much blood I lost but mostly how my foot simply felt a little stiff and numb, but there was never any intense pain. I was sure I broke bones.
Luckily there was a skiboat in the cave with me that saw the whole thing happen and offered assistance. They threw me a towel to wrap it in and made sure I was okay by towing us out to the main channel and then followed us the rest of the way back to our camp. So I am very grateful to the crew of "Hit it, Hank!" for being there and helping. I was able to drive no problem, I feared I would be hurting too much or would get dizzy or had damaged the jetski too much for it to be able to operate. When I get back to the boat, my parents and Verlis make preparations for the hour-long journey to the marina and we visit the medical clinic. Fun.
So I get x-rays done and 7 stitches and a bunch of medicine. Surprisingly and miraculously I have not broken any bones, and even after the adrenaline wears off I didn't feel queasy or a higher level of pain. I took it like a maaaan. I have a cut on the bottom/ball of my foot, two large gashes on the top that required stitches, and a lot of scraps over the rest of it. The absolute biggest concern on the lake when you get a cut is infection... that shit is nasty and will ruin your day pretty quick so I was put on antibiotics and a high dose of Ibproferin for swelling, with some pain medication just in case. Doctor said I could walk on it and even go swimming the next day. That absolutely astounded me- I should be so much worse off and at the very least should have ruined my vacation! After all, this was unfortunately all happening during day 2 of the trip and I was already thinking of what horrid long-term effects this would have on my life... and none of it good.
Here are my foot photos, they aren't real-real bad but I figured I put a warning on it just in case. Contains some blood, scabs, and bruising: [link]
I gave it a full extra day of rest before swimming or walking on it, just in case. It looked horrible, it was hard to sleep with it elevated and iced all the time, and it kept bleeding and pussing throughout the week. I managed to hike all the way to Rainbow Bridge from the docks, and I was able to swim using only one leg just fine and even take the jetski out for a few more spins. I didn't mind as much for not being able to do hiking, rock climbing, wakeboarding, and nearly everything else that Lake Powell is about because I just took Sorin's camera and photographed EVERYTHING. I'm huge about documenting the trip and was bummed I couldn't use my own camera, so that helped make up for it. I got to do some drawing and some reading and stayed out of the sun more than usual so I didn't burn to a crisp. I still had a really good time.
I wish I could say the same for my dad... we borrowed a minivan from some neighbors to haul the jetskis on and my dad accidentally scratched their car's bumper with the trailer before we even started our trip. When we get there the houseboat's top deck freezer is broken so we can't keep ice cold for the whole trip and have to make several marina runs that week and a few other various things were broken on the boat. Then of course I go mess up my foot which takes a chunk out of my parent's day and wallet, then we all have a stressful time packing up everything because several people were unable to help for various reasons, and then as we're about to head on the road, my dad couldn't see behind him and accidentally backs up the skiboat trailer into Sorin's TARDIS (blue Element) and the prop goes right through the back door of the car with a big gash. I'm sure I'm missing an incident or two here, but basically there was already talk from my parents about this trip being our last one to Powell, and now I fear all the shenanigans have sealed that deal which makes me incredibly sad.
Lake Powell is my favorite place on earth and I feel like I ruined it with my accident and missed my last opportunity to do awesome Powell things. So I desperately hope we can go next year so I get my opportunity to NOT break myself. This is ironically the 2nd Powell trip that I had a messed up foot and couldn't do anything- I had a broken ankle from a skateboarding accident back in 2004, so there was "no everything" for me that year it was barely worth going. At least I got to do things this time around.
Now I'm back in the real world (boo) with Rocky Mountain Fur Con right around the corner that I'm severely under-prepared for, tons of commissions I'm working on, a mountain of emails to answer, and all of it done even more slowly than usual because I have to rest my foot and can't get around anywhere. I also can't go to work for a week until I'm more healed. On top of all that, I just found out yesterday with a visit to the doctor that my foot is indeed infected even after all those precautions and antibiotics. They took the stitches out early since they were a foreign body in the wound and I got stronger medication that upsets my stomach and related systems, which adds to my problems. Oh yes and during the last 2 days of the trip I developed these awful mouth sores on the roof of my mouth and my uvula then my tongue felt like it was burned, which I feared to all be some sort of allergic reaction. It was tested negative for strep and is a lot better today compared to the last 4 days. But if my foot doesn't look significantly better tomorrow, I have to go back to the doctor again. Ugh.
So that's kinda what's all been happening in Riley-land. I need to go lay down and elevate my foot again, been sitting at the computer too long. Can't wait to be back to normal.
It's time for some Spring cleaning... in the middle of Summer. Because school prevented me from getting ANYTHING done whatsoever before now.
I recently cleaned the whole studio.
Then I messed it all up again with a foam explosion |D
I've finally gone through all my foam inventory and scraps I've been holding onto forever and determined that you guys could probably put it to better use than I can at the moment. I've not used a whole lot of it like I previously thought I would and it's just been sitting in storage taking up my entire basement. When I do go back to work with foam more extensively again, a majority of it will be done with reticulated foam anyhow. I have scraps and rolls and pieces and random grab bags of stuff all for sale over at my webstore, along with some flawed/discounted resin masks and costume parts.
So while I was in the middle of photographing all that foam... this happened:
ALL OF MY SAD! :<<<
So I desperately need a new camera or I can't photograph my artwork and produce YouTube videos! Since I'm forced to buy a new camera, I might as well buy one that's going to last me instead of a little pocket cam I have to swap out every 3 years. I'm looking to get an DSLR and upgrade the lens over time until I can purchase an even nicer body down the line.
I'll be working towards a Nikon 3200 and 2 kit lenses: 18-55mm & 55-200mm with VR, to start me out.
If you donate, I'll give you a free CHC sticker, one of my animated business cards to play with, and a doodle if you send me your address... and you could potentially get cooler stuff with higher donation amounts :3 Or you can help buy some things off my webstore like foam or discounted masks as I'll be taking a portion of those sales towards the camera purchase.
My Paypal: firstname.lastname@example.org You can keep an eye on my progress on my userpage and I'll update periodically through the journal. Thanks for your help in advance!
Alright, time for bed and then I'm up to work on cutting masks all day. I'll be Livestreaming sometime during the day and also working outside for a change, but don't have a set up yet- it'll be whenever I wake up! XD Keep an eye out on Twitter or DA. I'll try to let you know an hour in advance. See ya guys later!
Attention! I have recently purged all notes from my message box!!!
This is because I had over 150 of them to go through and I simply don't have the time and patience to do that... especially because many notes are outdated now and irrelevant, I can't afford to spend time answering old questions that many not be needed any longer. If you've tried to note me anytime between November 20th, 2012 and Today, and I did not respond back to your note, then I have marked it as read to remove the notice from my message bar but sadly was unable to get around to reading it. I've tossed it away in a folder never to be seen again.
I greatly apologize for not being able to get around to each and every note but there are far too many messages to keep track of and I was completely overwhelmed by it. If you have something important you'd like to message me about, I much more strongly prefer you emailing me instead: riley[at]caninehybrid[dot]com. I do ask that you keep casual messages to DA however and I will try harder to keep a closer eye on my notes in return.
While I was going through the purge, I noticed that I received a lot of notes asking about commissions. As much as I'd like to offer them, I think people have been misinformed about what I offer and when to ask for quotes. So I want to try and straighten that out now.
I have not finalized how I will break down my prices to be able to offer accurate quotes so please don't ask for them at this time. If you want a ballpark estimate, heads will start at $500 and can go as high as $700 depending on complexity. Pieces and parts (tails, hands, feet) will be an average of $100 but greatly depends on the item. Standard full suit will be in the $1500 range. Something with a large amount of body padding will be between $2000 and $3000 (Shadow Lugia and Groudon as examples respectively). All in all, these are pretty standard creature suit prices based on the materials and amount of work but these should not be treated as proper quotes and may change dramatically over time.
Allow me to make an official statement: I have never publicly opened for completed mask or full suit commissions nor have I developed a system for taking on such commissions, even though that has been a long term goal. It is true that I have naively taken on projects in the past for custom costume work when I wasn't in a proper state to do so, and those projects have either been cancelled or refunded. If you point fingers at Groudon then you should be aware that this was not a true commission and I gained no profit from it. It was a project that was built for a friend and had financial help only towards the purchase of the materials. I volunteered all 300 hours of my time towards building it. The suit is co-owned by myself and the performer it was tailored to fit so we can both share it. It gave me some experience building a suit for someone else to wear so I have slowly gained practice in making things for people other than myself and hope to do it a few more times with friends privately before I can confidently offer the service to others publicly.
I am not ready to take on full commissions at this time due to an uncertainly in my future living and job situation. I cannot dedicate the proper amount of time towards new projects at the moment and won't even consider it until I've completely finished my art commissions and my webstore orders- those get top priority. I will make no promises of when I can open for custom costume commissions and it may not even be an option for me this year. I can barely make stuff for myself these days; it's been two years since I finished my last costume after all :<
If you are looking to make a purchase in my webstore, it has been closed to new orders since the end of March as to halt the growth of my to-do list. I currently plan to re-open it in August after my local convention RMFC with pre-made stock and new items. However during July if I create any minorly flawed items, I will be offering them for immediate sale at a discount and will announce on DA, Twitter, and Facebook when those items become available. Instead of creating a sales post here, I will be adding them to a special discount section in my webstore to make it much easier to keep track of, calculate shipping, and purchase from me. (I also pay a lot of money to run a closed webstore, so I want to put it back to good use! XD)
If you have any questions at all, let me know! I am back to working on webstore stuff every day now and will occasionally switch gears to art commissions throughout. Livestreams and YouTube videos are also starting up again because I miss doing it. Keep an eye out!

So I will definitely be getting some more Livestream broadcasts set up soon, I miss doing them. I'll be showing my process on making mask orders and drawing the commissions I owe from last year's RMFC.
Also I wanted to remind everyone that I do not often check my deviantART notes thesedays, and my sales email is still NOT working. Therefore if you want to contact me about anything, please do so at email@example.com thanks!
And well I guess it's time to get back to work now, lots to catch up on.
I am now the proud owner of a shiny new Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Arts and Animation from the Art Institute of Colorado!
The moment after I completed high school, I was swept away to attend college with the idea that I would be graduating in December of 2011. Welp, 5 years later I'm finally here, ready to pursue bigger and better things in my life. And though you'll all wave it of like "oh, that Riley was always going to succeed and do well in school and graduate this quarter no problem" it was actually very far from the truth. In fact I had to work extremely extremely hard, more than I have ever before during this past week since coming back from A-kon, in order to qualify for the right to graduate at all:
I had to write the second half my 20-page capstone paper and throw a presentation together for it the day I got back from the convention. I then spent a day dedicated to learning and producing 3d dynamics and simulation examples to apply for proficiency credit in a class I didn't go through, and was mistakenly not placed into this quarter due to discovering a last minute mistake on my audit, to have enough credits required for graduation. Then a half day of signature hunting for grad sign-off, and finally 72 hours of non-stop drawing to finish my animated short, with maybe 6 hours of nap/sleep throughout that time in total.
My hand still feels like it's holding a tablet pen and I was running on pure hopes, dreams, and adrenaline at that point. I was extremely close to not graduating if I didn't pull everything together at the last minute and surprised most of my teachers that I was able to do so. HA! Take that! The animated short is finished enough to graduate with, but it's far from being as polished as I would like. I still need to dedicate a few solid days to finish painting the backgrounds (more rocks!), cleanup some of the linework that's a bit rough in a few areas, and add the character's markings and shadows. THEN I'll upload it for everyone to see. You can get a preview of some of the scenes in my short in my new demo reel video, fresh on YouTube as of yesterday:
It's been a very interesting journey overall and despite everything that's happened, good or bad along the way, I'm really glad it's all over now. I'll probably miss school later down the line but I'm thrilled to be free. It hasn't quite sunk in yet... we'll see if it hits me during the film festival when they pass out awards, portfolio review, or the cap and gown ceremony. By the way, speaking of which:
That's right! If you're a local and want to come support my graduation accomplishments and my artwork, all these events are free and open to the public.
The Reel Thing
This is the Art Institute of Colorado's quarterly film festival. It is about an hour and a half long where students can submit personal and class work to be showcased and have the ability to win awards and prizes. I have entered 4 times and have won an award every time I've entered, so not to be too boastful but I would be surprised to not obtain an award for my portfolio accomplishments as well- it would just break the cycle! After the student work has been shown, there is a brief intermission and then all of the current "visual effects and motion graphics" and "media arts and animation" graduates of the quarter show their demo reels and animated shorts and the portfolio awards are announced during the presentation. It's a great way to see the graduate's pieces at once and a general sampling of student work. There is free food and live music, a sort of party before the film.
Date: Thursday, June 13th Time: Doors open at 6:00pm, film starts at 7:00pm Location: The Church nightclub, directly across the street of the Art Institute and caddy corner to the Colorado History Museum. 1160 Lincoln St, Denver, CO
This is when I the graduates from every program at the Art Institute sets up a display booth, rather like a tradeshow or a convention, advertising themselves and showcasing their portfolio and school accomplishments. Everything from fashion to culinary to graphic design to animation will be found here, it's a wonderful chance to talk to the now alumni of the school about their experience during their degree program and it's great to see what kind of skill the school has produced. It's also a wonderful opportunity for employers to come and find fresh talent so there will be practice for us to pitch ourselves. If you want to check out some cool art and hear people brag about themselves (or at least that's what I'll be doing the whole time) stop by! It runs for 4 hours but you don't need to show up for very long unless you want to stay for the graduation ceremony. I will have one of the most awesome display tables (I do cons after all) and if you stop by you can see Groudon walking around the floor and you can get a free vinyl sticker and sexy lenticular business card from me :> Who doesn't like free stuff and Groudon hugs!??
Date: Friday, June 14th Time: 10am-1pm Location: The Colorado Convention Center (the one with the big blue bear) There is also a free shuttle running back and forth from the school to the convention center every 15 minutes or so. Just ask any of the workers where the Art Institute portfolios if you get lost in the building, it should be one of the downstairs areas. Colorado Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A 700, 14th Street, Denver CO 80202 aiportfolioshow.com/colorado/
This is it! Our time to shine by showing off our wonderfully flattering cap and gowns and receive our $100,000 pieces of paper. I can't honestly promise how exciting this will be but if you came, your support would be most appreciated by me! It also won't be nearly as long as a traditional graduation ceremony, we only have about 100 students but they will also be combining the graduates from this quarter and last quarter since they only do the ceremony twice a year now. This means that one of my best college friends, Alee ~redvarg (she's the one who animated Coyote in our Coyote and Eagle animated short), will be joining me for our special day together as she graduated last quarter without me :c This is kinda cool because my bestest friend/college roommate *Starmuttani and Alee's bestest friend/roommate ~THODRAGONFIRE got to graduate together last year, since they started before us, and now we get to do the same! Kind of a nice sentiment to graduate next to a friend who's been through the same thing for the same amount of time. It helps boost that whole "we did it! oh gawd we survived somehow!" thing, alongside "I know that feel bro".
Date: Friday, June 14th Time: 2pm-4pm-ish? Location:The Colorado Convention Center, down the hall from the portfolio reviews
SO WHAT'S NEXT?
I have a few opportunities lined up for some possible costume and prosthetics creation for a new show on a big TV network, and I'll likely be doing some animation/costume work with a musician for promotional and entertainment enhancements. I'm still looking into landing a job with Vicon Motion Systems working with motion capture, as that was the topic of study for my capstone paper, and my familiarity with the system over anyone else my age should greatly help since I am responsible for leading the demonstrations of the Vicon system during the school's open houses. I'm open to more opportunities though and we'll see what comes up!
In the meantime, I plan to more or less dedicate my energies towards catching up on all my webstore orders and art commissions for a solid 2 months or so if possible. Once I'm caught up I'd like to build some stock and produce a few more products for the webstore and for sale at Rocky Mountain Fur Con in August. Once that's all gone and I haven't got a full time job eating my life, I'll be free to pursue the idea of freelancing or supporting myself on my CanineHybrid Creations business... meaning the possibility of costume commissions at last. Oh yes and way more YouTube videos and Livestreaming.
Oh yes and I figure I'd might as well promote this, starting tomorrow I'm joining a new Pokémorph rpg here on DA . Applications are open so feel free to join us if it interests you.
So definitely keep an eye on developments in Riley-land as I step out into the big scary world. Hope to see some of you at graduation and local conventions!
Hey peeps! Just a very quick journal this time because I need to get back to work, but just so you know what's going on with me. A-kon was an absolute BLAST and I'm so glad I went, even if it hurt some of my progress for school. Still pushing to graduate this quarter and I just need to finish my animated short
So here's an overview of what I'm working on currently, I wanted to update my progress bars to make me feel better:
Demo Reel- 90%
Animated Short- 70%
Capstone Paper- 100%
Display Booth- 70%
Dynamics and Sim Demo- 100%
Due Date: Animated short- June 10th (Panic panic panic) Display booth- June 13th
Therefore I won't be spending much time on DA, Facebook, Twitter, or email until this is truly taken care of. Thanks for understanding and I'll let you know what the outcome is. See you on the other side, hopefully on my way to get a diploma on graduation day (June 14th)!
I thought this was the neatest idea, and I haven't done a meme in awhile. Gives me a chance to be a little inspired by you guys. I stoled dis frum la ~Pitafish
Rules: 1. For each of the first 10 people to comment to this journal, I will feature one of their OCs. I'll even tell you what I like about the OC. 2. If you comment, you have to do the same in your journal, putting the tagger (aka me) on in the first slot. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone and get feedback about your characters! 3. I highly would prefer if you have a variety of characters for me to choose from, makes it more fun that way 4. If you want to comment on the journal but not be counted for the OC promotion, then please let me know to skip over you!
Check out these Original Characters!
1. ~Pitafish This is Xiren, a character for the group "Organization Infinitus" (an Organization 13 roleplay from the Kingdom Hearts series). I thought this character's powers were most amusing- she uses frogs and other amphibians to attack opponents XD She's also from the Princess and the Frog world which I thought was unique, and the fact that I finally got to meet pitafish in person when I went down to visit Lousiana for *NightTwilightWolf and ~MajinFido0's wedding last weekend... so it seemed extra appropriate. And the powers she gets from her berserk form are cool- poison dart frog where her skin becomes toxic and she can climb on walls. Hell yeah, she makes frog powers cool! Kinda reminds me of the Power Rangers movie when the black ranger is all upset for getting stuck with the frog animal guide when everyone else gets cool shit like wolf, gorilla, falcon, etc.
2. ~DemiTheAwwesome I really like this character, but I think mostly because I'm a sucker for shades of gray (as long as there's not 50 of them!) I especially love those big purple eyes. The markings are very complementary with one another and very pleasing to look at. I've always been more of a fan of natural-colored characters and this has just the right blend of it. Overall awesome!
3.*TaintedTamer TaintedTamer has SO MANY CHARACTERS, thus making this an extremely hard decision. I almost picked Firstgear (a Transformers character) because his color scheme and design was so cool, but I thought you guys would appreciate something a little more unique that stood out to me the first time I strolled through the gallery. This is Holz who is a wood scorpion for the world of Planet Meddus. ~peanutchan came up with the concept of these bug people and their designs are really cool and creative! I really like his tail, almost reminds me of a xenomorph which I love
4.*ZackLoup Okay, this one was an obvious choice for a feature. I already liked the character a lot since *KikoJaharo used one of my canine blanks to create a fursuit of Ray, which turned out totally awesome! Ray's kind of a badass rebel guy, down on his luck. I decided to learn a little more about the character so I read all the current pages of the comic he is featured in... which is about zombies If you're interested in giving it a read, check it out here: kiraloup.deviantart.com/galler…
5.~Tenakinn I was instantly drawn to these characters out of all the original and creative pony OCs that Tenakinn has everywhere in their gallery. These guys are just so darn cute! Their names are Izzy Pop and Fizzy Pop, and they're siblings. But if that wasn't cute enough, they also run a juice bar together! How perfect is that?? I really like their designs because it's so bright and happy, but totally works for a juice bar setting and their designs really work together. I'm a sucker for the sibling pairs because of my brother and I's OC ponies :3
6. ~NTC7 It's Nicolai the wagon! XDD That's "wolf-dragon" in fact. He's more primarily a wolf with a shapeshifting ability. Draconic features begin appearing depending on what mood or emotional state he is in and can protect him like armor with scales and spikes, even change color. I really want to see more art of him *hint hint* And more art on DA *hiiiiiint*
7. ~DaChief07 This is Kayshe! There's only this one drawing of him and it's rather old, but among all the other creatures in the gallery, this one really stood out to me. Such a great level of detail in all those scales! Some sort of mutant turtle dragon best I can tell, I really like the patterns on the arms. He looks like someone you wouldn't want to mess with. By the way, the most impressive thing in her gallery is her Transformers cosplay of Blitzwing and you should totally check it out. dachief07.deviantart.com/galle…
8. ~LuxiotheEchidna This is Ephanial, a dracomorph and the last of his species. He's a humanoid but blessed (or cursed, your choice) with the power of the elder dragons. He definitely got a dark past but there seems potential in his future. What blows me away though is the sheer detail of this armor- I mean LOOK AT IT. That outfit is insane yet it really all works together. It's a stunning piece and definitely unique.
9. ~19646 This is Rose Rhyme, a pony with a little bit of an attitude who tends to lecture or correct others. When she does so, she likes to make her point in rhymes. When she gets her cutie mark, it will be of a rose and a scroll. She seems like a smart pony but still needs to learn the magic of friendship, lol I like her big, unkempt hair with the frizzy ends.
10.*JAZZERDAWG Z-Aereo is this guy's name, he's a white wolf with some really interesting markings. I really like the blue/white color scheme with the little black toes. Really cute! This is actually a combination of two characters- a male and female spirit wolf- and Jazzer is working on a storyline that could be turned into an anime. They're looking for artists help to bring that vision to life so feel free to ask about the series.
That's all for this batch! I may do this again in the future, no doubt there's a ton more characters out there that deserve some awesome featuring. Thanks for your participation and interest :3
Oh man oh man oh man! Look at this sexiness. JUST LOOK AT IT
It has been a long 7 hours of work but I think I finally pulled it all together. Allow me to introduce you to my new deviantART journal skin! My previous skin had been bothering me for a long time and I've just lived with it for years simply because I knew it would be a very involved project to try and tackle making a new one. But it desperately needed it. And best of all, it now matches my new website branding! Speaking of which, I've been completely overhauling my site CanineHybrid.com for the past few months. If you haven't seen what I've been up to over there, go take a look. I've really pulled it together as a requirement for my upcoming graduation and so far was able to really impress my professors and advisors.
As you might suspect, the rest of my DA profile will be getting a similar facelift when I've got some more time on my hands. I blame =Miss-Melis for the inspiration since she recently re-did her entire page and it looks kick-ass now. Made my page all jelly and whatnot... so I gave my DA some love to keep it happy.
I have just wrapped up week 6 at school- which marks the halfway point for the current school quarter. This is a huge deal since I had minterms and a huge graduation presentation to give, which I'm happy to say that I have aced! Aside from being much further behind on my animation project than I would like and the stress, I have really been having a great last quarter. For those of you unaware, I am graduating from the Art Institute of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts in "Media Arts and Animation" on June 14th. So here's an overview of what I'm working on:
Demo Reel- 90%
Animated Short- 30%
Capstone Paper- 20%
Display Booth- 40%
Due Date: June 3rd (Panic panic panic)
As for everything else...
Webstore will remain closed until further notice. I will be finishing all orders and building up convention stock for RMFC soon as graduation is out of the way, selling only pre-made items in the meantime. During this time I'll be making feline masks and accessories for all masks (jawsets, noses, etc)
Rocky Mountain Fur Con commissions will be the first pieces of art I tackle after graduation, I'd like them finished asap and definitely before this year's RMFC
Costumes such as Riley the German Shepherd and a few secret projects will be resumed later this summer as time allows, I am looking for a new job with my degree and that can change a lot about my living situation and schedule if I'm successful
"Sales" email is still acting up and being weird, if you need to contact me about anything please don't send DA notes or messages on social sites- use riley[at]caninehybrid.com instead and I'll get back to you within 3 days
By the way, I will be out of reach from May 9 - May 12 due to *NightTwilightWolf and ~MajinFido0's wedding... plane trips, good friends, and capstone paper writing await me this weekend! Ooooh man
Hello world! I figured now would be a great time to update you on some things that are happening. I'm making a few changes in order to get things working the best for myself and everyone relying on me because so far... well, I've been pretty sucky at it.
First off I would like to announce that my online webstore is closing! I will not be taking any more orders until my current queue is completely wiped out, and once that happens I'll be opening up again. I will never do pre-orders again since I was unable to predict both the high interest and the insufficient amount of free time I would have to work on them the past half year... it's continuously pushed me back further and becomes a very unfairly long wait for those interested in making a purchase. Next time my queue gets too full, I will cut off the ability to order from the store temporarily until it's more under control again so this doesn't ever get out of hand like its been doing.
My financial situation is still pretty awful right now, I'm the poorest I've been in my life and it's rather terrifying. My parent's cut me off financially in January and I've been struggling to stay on my feet since. Keep an eye out for on-the-spot Livestream commissions and some pre-made or flawed webstore items sales posts to help me get some quick cash so I don't die. The timing of needing enough money by a certain point each month to ensure I can live in my house with water and electricity and internet and food is kind of the most important thing to take care of in my life right now and I'm a complete noob at it. I luckily have enough stocked materials in my workroom to create the rest of the webstore orders in my queue, so that's pre-paid for, and I finally got my Paypal debit card in so I can pay for all the shipping directly instead of having to wait 5 days to transfer funds into my bank account. Whew that's going to help a ton.
Other than stereotypical financial problems, I have some more major news from Rileyland- I am officially graduating from college in June! It's really happening this time! I've been stuck at the school since Summer 2008 and I've very much ready to get my degree and be done with homework forever. There are a few HUGE projects I need to take care of in order for me to actually graduate. First is my animated short "The Last Flower" which is about 25% done. I need to get it like at least 80% done in only a month's time. During this time I need to write my capstone thesis paper and spend hours researching, interviewing, and writing to get a complete rough draft by then. Then I need to put together my demo reel, finish all my branding (website, portfolio book, resumé, etc) roughly completing that by the same time. If that wasn't a crazy amount of work to try and cram in my life, on top of that I have my webstore orders to try and clear out of the way asap, the commissions I took at RMFC to finish (and many of them I'd like to finish to be included in my portfolio), AND complete my Riley costume for events this summer and for use in my portfolio. I'm going to have a very hard time working through all that so bare with me for the next 3 months of hell.
And now for something completely different- my boyfriend 's video entry for the Best Waver Contest
Congratulations Verlis on winning 1st place in the Liberty Tax 2013 signholding contest- you're officially the best waver in North America! I filmed, edit, and even star in the video, check it out!!! 8DD (And go like him on Facebook... because he's special like that-> Liberty Gold Spinner)
Hello internetland! Just wanted to send out a quick reminder that today will be the new episode of Sem on my Livestream channel. This will be happening at 2:00pm Mountain Standard Time and we are now offline. Click here to automatically detect what that will be in your time zone.
Sem is an original sci-fi series by my oldest friend *SorinCrecens who is the director and voice of the main character named Sem. It is presented in both a radio drama animatic format, which is basically a full audio soundtrack (dialog, sfx, and music) synced to graphic-novel images... rather like a movie soundtrack played over a storyboard. It's got a time travel theme to it and reminds me a bit of Doctor Who. I fell in love with the project and it's had some amazing response so far from everyone I've shown it to ever since we revealed the pilot episode. It will be a fun afternoon of creativity, discussion, cool music, and free art! Yes, that's right, FREE ART.
If you join in on the stream from beginning to end of the Sem episode, you'll be eligible to enter. A randomly selected winner will receive art of their character and have it drawn live during the stream. Check out the other drawings I've done for the Sem streams... you could be next!
Sem Ep 1-3
If you haven't joined us for episodes 1-3, I highly recommend watching the first few over on YouTube. They're 15-20 minutes long and awesome, getting constantly better in both plot development and artwork. I star as a character in 2 and 3 by the way :>
So I hate to be asking this at all... considering me + commissions = problems, but that's exactly why I haven't publicly opened for commissions outside of cons for years, and don't really want to offer slots anymore... they're like promises I can't keep (or just ones that get fulfilled very very late)
So I'm going to try out a new system that seems to be working well for a ton of artists I know: Livestream commissions!
First off, the reason behind me doing this- I have rent to pay off the beginning of next week and I'm nowhere near the amount I need to cover it yet. I also got hit by two big overdraft fees recently due to companies automatically charging my accounts on a scheduled billing cycle, which would have been fine, but it went through without my knowledge or they were early in charging me, so I didn't have enough money in the right account at the right time and WHAM suddenly I'm down almost $100 for no good reason. UGH! The desperate need for cash in a short amount of time has twisted my arm to force me to take on commissions when I should be using my time focusing on my school projects for graduation. Just means I get to work my tail off even more to do both.
If you haven't seen it yet, I just put up a sales post about some discounted webstore items. If you were looking to purchase a mask or nose from me, here's a great way to get one cheaper and faster than ever before!
How To Commission
Great! You're interested in a commission! These will be first-come, first serve opportunities and all arrangements will be made via Livestream. These commissions will be done on-the-spot so you'll get to watch it come to life right before your eyes so you know you'll be getting some instant return on your purchase. Win-win for both of us, no more of this waiting shenanigans. If it works out well enough, I may be able to open for more commission days like this more often. So I do hope you'll stop by and give some support!
Livestream Broadcast info:
Stream is OFFLINE! Started February 27th at 1pm MST (click here to instantly convert this into your time zone) and will go on for as long as I can go on for. It will be most of the day.
Commission info: I would like to start out by opening for badge size, flat colored characters. Your choice of headshot ($20) or full bodies ($25) Prices can also go higher/lower than this depending on complexity. Yes you can have multiple characters/commissions! You'll pay the full amount ($20 or $25) per character drawn for you, no discounts by combining them in the same picture. Your commission must be paid in full up front before I begin working. No reserving slots, if you're present and ready to pay immediately for the next opening, then you'll get it.
($20 for character simplicity or headshots that we can pretend are flat colored)
($25 standard pricing)
Let me know if you have any more questions! Hope to see you on the stream
Today I'm turning 23, whoo! I think Verlis has something planned for dinner otherwise I'm not really doing anything other than working on my Riley suit... which is becoming more and more a lost cause to complete it in time for Further Confusion, mostly because work decided to schedule me like every day next week leading up to the trip and I'm back in school again. >:C I'm reconsidering making the suit the new Hybrid Riley as well but I just can't decide. I'm thinking I might be happier switching modes to drawing and finishing Hybrid Riley's ref for con commissions, but I'd also be sad if I didn't have anything to wear at the con. Yet I'd hate to half ass it. Maybe I'll just finish the head and paws? Still have tons of webstore orders to do in the meantime as well (by the way I have a webstore tracker now: www.caninehybrid.com/orders). UGH there's just not enough hours in the day!
Anyways- HAVE A MEME
Further Confusion 2013 Meme

What will you be doing the most at the convention?
Normal w/ Riley hat, spiked hair (and my many awesome shirts), or on a good hair day :

Can I buy you a drink/food?
I'm down for noms! I'm not an alcohol person though
Can we hang out?
I'd be happy to chill with people and get to know them. I'm quite sociable and easy to get along with, but if I'm quiet or reserved, either I'm tired or I think you're a creeper and am just too polite to say so.
I really want to meet you, whats the best way I can find you / reach you ?
Tweet me =CanineHybrid! I always have my phone on hand and will try to check it constantly (though may take a bit to respond). Otherwise I'll probably be in the dealer's room a ton and a majority of fursuit/art tracks and hanging out with Monoyasha a lot of the time. See my schedule for the list of panels I plan to attend
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just call out "Riley!" or "CanineHybrid!" Or just come up to me, I don't mind being approached and am always looking for a good conversation. Don't be nervous to say hi!
Anything you are going to buy in the Artist Alley / Dealers Den?
I've got pre-order badges from Idess and Kacey, but I definitely want more badges and drawings of Theod and hybrid Riley for sure. Whatever I can afford really.
Anyone you are looking forward to meeting?
2 Gryphon, various fursuit builders, tons of artists, a few online friends
I'm so super excited for this! It's gonna be a year of firsts for me- first out of state con I'm flying out to by myself, first time at a large fur con, first time I'll have a personal fursuit, first time in San Jose. I feel so grown up now |D
Who else is going!!? I want to compile a list of peeps I know here on my journal.
So guess what, I'm sick AGAIN >< I don't know why and I absolutely hate it because it's killing my productivity. Along with being scheduled more at work and the holidays getting in the way, I've been a little behind schedule on everything. I was hoping to get the most out of my December but I disappointed myself there. Weeelp, time to move forward from here.
If you were interested in purchasing a resin blank from my webstore, Jan 1st was the last day to save $10 for New Years! Sale is over now but keep in mind that I am behind on orders so it'll take 3 weeks or so to get to you if you order anything right now. Still, I won't be having another sale for quite awhile so I can focus on finishing orders and creating new product.
Speaking of new product, for Christmas I received an industrial compressor and compression chamber- meaning that I can now do airbrush work AND pressure casting! This means that I will now be offering resin eyes because with my new toys, I can pressure cast them to be completely bubble-free. I'm adding them to the webstore right now. Jawsets and pawpads will be next, then I can move onto fixing my dragon blank and starting on the feline sculpt. Send me a note or an email if you have any questions (firstname.lastname@example.org)
So a lot of shit went down last month... long story short my graduation date has been pushed from March to June 2013 and my parents are no longer financially supporting my living costs in Denver. They are luckily still paying for my school but the rest falls onto me to pay rent and have enough to eat every month. Lots of new responsibilities and work ahead of me to pull everything off. I'm hoping this will be a good thing for me to get more organized and stay on top of things.
I'll be updating my Newsletter this week with more detailed craft info and also starting making use of my website's blog. This month's overview: I will be doing a lot of webstore orders, I will be turning 23 on January 12th, I start school again on the 7th (too soon!), and I'm attempting to make and finish my Riley the German Shepherd Dog half suit in time for Further Confusion Jan 17-20. I recently cleaned out and re-organized the entire storage room area and now I have a proper work studio for my crafting.
Lastly, I gotta talk about my holidays a bit :3 I think I got some pretty bitchin' gifts for people this year.
For my brother ~ReyTiger I commissioned a beautiful, custom MLP plush from *fireflytwinkletoes of his original character Frost Byte. My parents I commissioned an original painting of my dog Charlie, who passed away this year, from *MorRokko which I got professionally mounted and framed in museum glass.
For the rest of my friends, I seriously cannot thank the talented and inspiring =Miss-Melis for tackling a HUGE request and doing each one so much cute justice! Take a look! (also a few are late so there's a handful we're still working on finishing up) Melissa... you are an art GOD!!!
Whew! Hope everyone is doing well, I look forward to the new year!
