Custom Digitigrade Stilts by CanineHybrid Custom Digitigrade Stilts by CanineHybrid
Some photos of my new digitigrade stilts built by the talented WizardGir/~BalthezarArith

>>>CLICK TO GO WATCH THEM IN ACTION!<<<

Gir has made several pairs over the past few years trying to prefect his design. These are a custom set specifically for my leg measurements and for my new costume project- which required me to have quite a bit of length to the foot extension, 7" of additional length to be precise, that gives me quite a height boost as you can see for yourself.

My brother =ReyTiger standing next to me is 6ft tall, so a rough estimate is that they make me about 6'6". I'm normally 5'6" so I get to see the world in a whole new perspective! They are a lot of fun but naturally give me quite the workout. I have only had the stilts in my possession for 4 days now but plan to practice nearly every day until I can get a much more natural walk and build up my endurance. As demonstrated in the video, I can do a whole lot with them- including going over different terrain (cement, grass, and sand), up and down inclines, can pseudo-run, pick things up off the ground, and possibly the most important element: the ability to stand still for long periods of time.

Overall I'm very pleased with how they turned out, but they'll need some tweaking, some padding to make them more comfortable, and they do make a bit of squeaky metal noises as expected, but it's nothing that I can't work with. One day I'd love to upgrade to the Digilegs by Area 51 to see how their model compares. By the way if you're interested in a pair of your own, Gir is willing to take commissions on these every so often- however he does prefer to work with friends and experienced costumers, as well as currently not having much free time, but he was a pleasure to work with. If you're looking for the professional stilts, check out my previous review for all the details: [link]

And of course, this is the creature that these stilts will be supporting:

You should promote these legs to the Disney company. They should use them for the Animal Mascot characters, such as the "beast" from Beauty and the Beast!! ;-)

I want a pair for making a succubus or faun makeup. Do you make and sell these?
And how's the suit coming along? Will there be a video of you in costume in the near future?

Sounds like they could be a lot of work to wear, then. My endurance is low, so I'd probably fare rather poorly if I tried to use something like these...

Helpful hint
To keep balance with such a large head piece, you need a floating style tail. Much like those wooden snake toys that seem to make lifelike movements. Just make sure you get one that you can set on your lower back and strap around your waist and that it is long enough to give you good balance without touching the ground.

I just literally screamed.

How can I get a pair of these? Do you make them as commission? How much are they??

I want to make a fullsuit of the Great Jaggi from Capcom's Monster Hunter and these would intensify the look I'm searching for 10-fold!

Ahaha |D That was pretty much my reaction when I first saw the professional version was going to be produced by Weta Studios- like a dream come true (that ultimately didn't, but hey)

I commissioned these for $700 from my friend WizardGir because I do not know how to weld or work with mechanical things. The best way to contact him is through YouTube. But if you want to attempt building a pair yourself, check out this tutorial: [link]

I'll warn you now though, if you're not absolutely dedicated to this costume project, don't go the stilts route. They are proving to be a major pain in the butt every step of the way.

Also Great Jaggi?

Yea have you ever played Monster Hunter Tri? Great Jaggi is my favorite monster from it.

And yea, after a long time of looking around dA at tutorials and other raptor cosplays/fullsuits, I've decided stilts aren't in my current budget. Maybe when I'm a lot better at making fullsuits, I'll try for these, but not now. This is my first fullsuit. I know it won't be perfect on the first try, but I certainly hope it can come out remotely how I want it to look!

Are those easy to stand in and walk with? XD I made this fursona of mine [link] and the legs are quite similar. Do you think my design is more on an angle than yours and do you feel it could still work and that i'd feel balanced?

CanineHybrid Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2012  Professional General Artist
They are fairly easy to stand up and walk in, yes. But it's extremely tiring to do it for any length of time so I'm training my endurance up best I can.

I highly recommend not bending your legs so much- you'll be pretty much doing squats at that point. Just try bending your legs like your character and staying like that for a minute, you'll understand why it sucks and why no animal stands like this naturally- it's just too energy consuming to be useful. You can totally bend down like that while on the stilts, but the specific angle I'm standing at is what I call the "locking angle" in which is the most comfortable stance that the tension on the back cable locks your legs in place.

I plan to release another video eventually when I finish upgrading my stilts again demonstrating more of their capabilities so you can see what I'm talking about.

Ahhhh thank youuuuu >< < 3
I found it very annoying to lean with my back hunched and knees bent, I like to stand up. Maybe its not the best idea for a costume with my design :0 i've been trying to develop a humanoid version of her, hopefully that works out well ^^ even with a motorized scooter to hold myself i'd probably have the most annoyance in my neck from looking 'upwards' to see in front of myself. :0
